Shiftpod cleaning guide
How to remove playa dust from a Shiftpod
Playa dust is extremely fine and alkaline. The best results come from removing as much as possible while it is dry, then washing carefully instead of immediately soaking everything.
1. Empty and inspect the tent
Remove bedding, rugs, cables, and anything tucked into pockets. Photograph stains, damaged seams, zipper problems, and suspicious spots before cleaning.
2. Remove loose dust while it is dry
Set the tent up where you have space to reach every wall. Vacuum the floor, seams, corners, window edges, door tracks, and other places where dust collects. Use a soft brush attachment and avoid dragging grit across reflective surfaces.
3. Start with a vinegar wash
Playa dust is alkaline, so begin the wet-cleaning stage with a diluted vinegar wash to help neutralize the remaining alkaline residue. Spot-test the solution in an inconspicuous area first, then work gently from the top down in manageable sections.
4. Follow with gentle soap
After the vinegar wash, clean the tent with a gentle, tent-safe soap and clean water. Use soft cloths or brushes and pay special attention to doorways, lower wall panels, exterior skirts, seams, and zipper areas. Aggressive scrubbing can damage coatings and force dust deeper into seams.
5. Rinse away residue
Replace dirty water rather than spreading it around, and rinse away the vinegar, soap, and loosened dust. Do not use a pressure washer unless the tent manufacturer specifically approves it.
6. Dry it completely
Keep doors and windows open and move air through the tent. Check the floor, seams, insulation, and folds—not just the surfaces that face the sun. Do not pack the tent until it is fully dry.
7. Add Mold Guard protection
Once compatible surfaces are clean and dry, an optional mold and mildew preventer—such as Xanigo Marine Mold & Mildew Preventer—can be applied according to its label. This antimicrobial treatment is designed to control mold and mildew and leave an invisible protective layer that helps inhibit stain-causing growth during storage. Always spot-test first and follow the product label for compatible surfaces, application, drying, and reapplication.
Important: Consult the care instructions for your exact tent model. Existing delamination, weakened coatings, mold, or damaged seams may require a different approach.
